Laboratory (1)

The Ajubatus Laboratory is equipped to do clinical haematology and basic research. It is necessary to monitor the condition of the penguins admitted to the Intensive Care Unit as well as the recovered penguins prior to release. It is staffed by volunteers Barry Bousfield, veterinarian, Elizabeth Horne, medical technologist and Albert Schultz, consultant avian blood parasites.
Animal Planet Visit (6)

During July played host to a group of aspiring wild life film makers from Animal Planet. The programme forms part of the Animal Planet Competition for young film makers. We enjoyed having them on site and although some of the "penguin-actors" did not want to play along - we hope that these young film makers will carry the rehabilitation message far and wide. We would like to thank both the crew and Lindle for their generous donation to our cause
Walking Elvis (11)

Elvis also known as Madiba is getting slighthly overweight and had to go on an exercise programme. Madiba will be immigrating to the Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha, America soon. He is currently awaiting his travel permits - not easy to get into America, not even if you are Madiba the King.
Seal (11)

Although our primary work is with marine birds we often get called out for other marine species. We help and assist where we can. This little Sub-Antarctic Seal Pup washed up on our beach and Craig the scientist at Bayworld requested that we stabilise him. We transported the Seal to Bayworld in Port Elizabeth where he spend a few days resting and recovering. He was released again at Cape St. Francis.
The return of the Cormorant (6)

Cresty, a Whitebreasted Cormorant was released from the rehab a while ago. He now returns ever so often to sample the sardine sushi that is served at the Rehab Restaurant
Group Photos of Penguins (17)

Included in this album is a collection of the current residents of the Rehab Facility socialising and just generally hanging about.
Building Project (13)

We started the building project in late August 2006 and the first penguins moved in, in December 2006. Click on the photo to experience the building of a dream
Oil Spill (17)

On the first of September 2006 we picked up a oiled penguin on the beach in Cape St. Francis. As always when finding an oiled penguin we contacted SANParks and Bayworld to report the incident. It was soon clear that we were dealing with a mystery spill. Oiled birds were collected from Bird Island and because the Ajubatus Centre was still under construction the desicion was made to send the stongest birds to SANCCOB in the Western Cape. It was however vital to rehydrate the birds before we fly them to Cape Town. A rehydration station was set up in the SAA Cargo Area. We kept back the weakest birds and they were treated at the Lighthouse - click here to view the chronicle of the September 2006 Oil Spill.
Elvis the King (23)

Elvis the King Penguin walked into our lives on Monday 22 January. Very far from his homeland, suffering from heat exhaustion and dehydration. He was treated and rehydrated at the Rehab facility and he is currently awaiting his "passport" and American visa for his journey to Omaha's John Doorly Zoo.
