| The real costs of rescue and rehabilitation operations are difficult to determine owing to the voluntary nature of much of the work. The seabird rescue and rehabilitation insurance claim for the Treasure oils spill in the Western Cape was R10 166 544 (US$ 1 459 000 at the time). This comes to a total cost of R628.00 per penguin released back into the wild in a healthy condition. (Rehabilitation of oiled African Penguins: a conservation success story. – P. Whittington 2003)
The monthly operational costs include the fish and medication needed for the penguins. To estimate the monthly operational cost is near impossible as this figure is affected by the number of birds in the center at any one time.
An amount of R10 000.00 per month will allow for the treatment of an average of
15 penguins treated per month.
In the event of an oil spill these cost will increase in relation to the amount of penguins that have to be treated.
Penguins are hardy creatures, and they have proofed that they can recover well after a period of rehabilitation. You can feel comfortable that your donation will make a difference in the future of the African Penguin.
